PSX Backups not working with Magic III v3 PS2

So I found a much older chip today the Magic III, so old in fact I can't find much info on it but luckily I had kept the wiring diagrams. Anyhow PS2 games are a success but alas I can't get PS1 backups booting to save my life. Anyone got any ideas with this ancient chip?

I think it's something to do with how you boot. Can't remember if it's to do with keeping your finger on the front on button after you first turn it on or if you need to be pressing it twice. Try a few combinations and see if that helps.
