Weird, as for some games like Gran Turismo 4, it works, according to the tutorial posted on PS3Hax (look on the 3rd page of this tutorial on PS3Hax)

I'm sceptical, also people in this thread have problems with entering service mode... I will wait for confirmation before I try this method again. I tested this many times before in various ways. I can't see this working.

True - you have got a point - and as well as that, from what I have read, you will need a legitimate PS2 game, a jailbreak device (I got an Android phone, but I don't think it can be used as such at the moment as I got a HTC Desire Z, which isn't listed as a jailbreak-usanle device), and a LV2.self (part 2) file, and only a few games work at the moment.
I was going to try it out but I don't even have everything that is needed, except the SELF file! :(

Compatability should be the same as when working under the cobra dongle right as all it does is enable the software emulator. If that is the case then I doubt much will be playable.

That's why some people are sceptical of this even on the PS3Hax forums - because of the issues associated with this, like getting out of service mode and so on!
Hence, don't do this unless you are SERIOUSLY willing to test this out.

This is my first day registered and post, and thanks for posting my "tutorial".
Lets clear somethings...
This was tested, if everyone reads the thread, on PS3 80GB on 3.55 kmeaw, using a jailbreak pen, i use usbjailbreak, others work too, you just need to enter on service mode and try. Was also tested on FW 3.72 Slim 120gb first portugal model, using progskeet, witch is the only way to enter and leave service mode on 3.56+ FW.
Almost everyone, except 2 ou 3 ppl are saying that it's not working on PS3 slims on 3.55. I can't test 3.55 on the slim, cause the PS3 isn't mine, and my friend don't want me to downgrade it.. So, i can't test it.
I've also 1 person saying that it's not working on a phat 80gb, according to him.
I've putted a "poll" for people to vote if they manage or not to do it, and if they the sucess. Until now, 7 positive in almost 2 days, and 2 negative(probably the 2 slim reports on comments?).
I'm no hacker, just when the news of sony releasing PS2 classics on PSN USA, without any changings, according to them, no remastered, not touched, no trophies.. Then i've remember, if PS3 withou BC like slims, don't have hardware to do it, like 60GB models, how can this be possible? Then i decided to try, and see if i would get or not some results. And for my surprise, it works. A few years ago, on FW 2.53 if not wrong, was the first time we ear about service mode on PS3, then no one as talk about it again. So that is why i decided to test, and on phat 3.55 are working, slims 3.55 aparently not, but on 3.72 is working, al least the only one i tested.
I'm sorry for my bad english, even on ps3hax thread, but im portuguese, no hacker, just a person that likes to do testing, new tecnology, some wird findings, lol.. So, if any developer want me to test any discovery, or something else, i don't mind to it, just contact me by PM, and share some info..

Like i comment with a user at hax, about the recent news about psp iso on ps3, maybe it would work, if we had a way to put a UMD inside... Would be interesting in my opinion to see the results. Maybe someone will start from now to think, that maybe it could be a way.. I don't have knowledge, or i would try to search with no problems.. Lets see where this may lead..

It looks like I'm out of luck with my 3.55 Slim. I will downgrade to 3.40 and try from there.

I think u have to do the opposite and upgrade to make it work because i think sony finshed there testing with the ps2 emu in 3.72 thats why they release it now and not years ago, but if u dont have a progkeet dont do it u never will be able to go back or leave service mode. but idont have to tell u that do i?

Heh, yes. I consider buying E3 Flasher to play around. I would like to go on PSN and play new games too, this would be just another reason to buy a flasher.
Too bad it doesn't appear to work on Slims (not that it's surprising)
It does work on Slims, but on 3.72 FW.

ok to quote viperturbo "Lets clear somethings..." and lets do it now before ppl regret it.
1. you cannot exit service mode above 3.55 .... thats it ..... dont go there unprotected as you wont come back.
2.progskeet will not get you out of service mode. it is a NOR / NAND reader /writer not a usb service tool this goes the same with E3 Flasher.
3. what you can do is upgrade to 3.72f/w back up your NOR / NAND with Progskeet / E3 Flasher check the dump is valid etc then patch the dump, put ps3 into service mode to play or try to play ps2 games then perform the downgrade, re-install 3.55f/w then re-install your homebrew and your backups and the patches to make your back ups work
so all in all a few min's of testing and a few hours of restoring the ps3
all cos u was told the progskeet will let you exit service mode.
great advice & ppl wonder why our scene is full of drama!
just to add. a good rule of thumb to follow is this:-
if someone says you can now do it but doesnt post some sort of proof (ie a link to a rep site's thread or video "although this can be fake still" ) then its bollocks. even rep dev's will give you proof!
