Sony announced today a new campaign called Only on PSN, and besides offering deals to PLUS customers that spent more then $60 bucks in a month, by giving them $10 credit, it also rolls out tomorrow the fact you can now download PS2 Classics that will work on all PS3 models even ones without the original PS2 hardware. -- Maybe Sony finally making usage of that 'software emulator' that been buried in the firmware since v2.50!
In addition to the PSN originals, the Only On PSN program will see the debut of downloadable PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation 3. The first five games included in the program will be Clover Studio’s brawler God Hand, VanillaWare’s action strategy GrimGrimoire and action role-playing game Odin Sphere, Konami’s tactics game Ring of Red, and Capcom’s 3D Ghosts ‘n Goblins spin-off Maximo: Ghosts to Glory. Sony did not detail prices for the Only On PSN originals or the PS2 rereleases.
Besides PS2 coming to the PSN store, the other big change as we already see with previous EA games and now with Uncharted 3 is that from NOW on, all FUTURE titles that have MultiPlayer online in them, will include an ONE-TIME online code you must enter to enable that feature, thus killing off the USED gaming sales of these titles and maybe slowing down the piracy rate a bit more on the PS3 platform!
Sony Computer Entertainment America has confirmed that an online pass will be included with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.
Furthermore, we've been told that ALL upcoming Sony games that feature an online component will include one.
"Online Pass will be incorporated into Uncharted 3 and future Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) games with online functionality," the company told Destructoid. "We will provide further information in the future. "
So there you go. It's pretty much a given that if Sony's bringing out a game with multiplayer, you're going to have to input a code. Lovely.
And the last big change confirmed today, is that in the near future in the New Year of 2012, Sony will be releasing a major firmware update that will turn on the 4K feature, for those that don't know, this is the new standard of 4096x2160, say Goodbye to 1080p, welcome to the new 4K world!
For now the firmware update will only support native stills of 4K res., but rumors are by CES we will hear of annoucement of Video support also!
At the CEATEC today in Japan, Sony announced the PS3 will get a firmware update around the beginning of 2012 that will allow it to natively output 4K stills. There's a PlayView "visual magazine" already available on the PlayStation store in Japan that supports 4K and 3D, but this update will bring super high res viewing of your vacation pics, or any other high res image files you can snag, to the living room.
Big things are indeed in store for the PS3, the question does tomorrow also bring about another firmware update? -- Times are a changing for sure!
Nice. I's like to see how game companies like gamestop and gamefly will respond to this. 4K stills, I want SquareEnix to release 4K pics of Final Fantasy.

I sorta doubt it'll use the preset emulator inside consoles, probably more of a total overhaul to the emulator preset into the game. Maybe this is that they're doing to fight Cobra as why the hell would they wait til now to finally implement something like this. I can say it finally seems like Sony is getting of their ass and it's about time. :P

They are there in the middle link of the bottom as news source:
Good news to the scene! We will be all able to play the PS2 titles regardless the PS3? How is Sony gonna pull this off with the current PS3 slim hardware?
Sony just said "Hey look you don't need backward compatible to play PS2 games on the ps3". That's how I read the news with more progress in the scene they just want to pull more of the CFW 3.55 to legit FWs so they are offering more to their customers. I bet this is mainly to target the CFW guys who wont update because of homebrew.
Next week on Crunch: "Earth is flat, how to avoid falling off the edge"
Well that's a nice change - Sony competing against the "sceners" in a (semi-)legitimate manner by trying to offer more than what the "sceners" can offer!
However, the Online Pass-style feature will annoy online gamers - that is for sure.
