Yep it seems easy enough to find out your own IDPS. Making your CEX to DEX is not so hard either, but only useful if you're a trying to gain more knowledge of the workings of the PS3, explore, develop, etc (and perhaps a few keys :P)
The latest Multiman shows you your IDPS under Information.
I have a feeling all you have to do is change the sixth byte to 82 (or A0 if you're feeling adventurous) and flash it back/use the .self in the leaked CEX-DEX kit to write it back. http://psx-updates.blogspot.com/2011...ps3s-idps.html
I'm guessing it would ylod if you try to boot with retail firmware, so you'd wanna be in F/S mode and use the lvl2diag.self to install DEX firmware, (or you might be able to get recovery mode and do it from there)
I think mathieulh is lying/misleading people into thinking it's SO HARD OMG BRICK to change a CEX to DEX, but no one wants to try (myself included; I don't really need a DEX machine, would be cool to play around with one though)
If you have a flasher you should try

Yes with the dump_flash.pkg you can search for your IDPS.
In the following link you can find info on obtaining the IDPS, changing it, and converting from CEX to DEX, not so hard for those interested: http://www.ps3news.com/ps3-hacks-jai...requires-idps/
i've read on irc logs that one of those reasons why they don't share the method exactly, is
the fear of abusing it. wrong people could do make a lot of cash to sell those consoles.
(or maybe they don't want the others to make money besides them...)
@litesoul
according to riku this method is useless, as the debug functions are not working.
