    DO NOT INSTALL THIS.

After ripping this PUP apart it appears the rundown will be VERY VERY SHORT.

This is RETAIL OFW 3.66 with just a 'few' of the files from DEBUG firmware.

    vsh.self
    index.dat
    version.txt

ALL OTHER FILES ARE RETAIL INCLUDING COREOS

EDIT: Never mind then apparently it's a mongrel retail firmware...

    Thanks for the update Cyber!

It's a start, albeit a shabby one, but you gotta give credit to those who try!

Thanks for the tip Cyberskunk. Some people's PS3 just got saved.

Edit: Installing debug on a retail console involves changing some console specific info in the NAND and potentially the syscon. There was a long thread about this at the other site. A firmware can't change those console specific info because they don't change via firmware. Glad I had my suspicions of this. And according to Math, changing a retail to debug is apparently hard to do.

Would'nt the pup need to be signed in order for the ps3 to accept the update? how did he sign the new pup with the modified/debug files?

Sorry if im way off topic here, its just i dont get how he swapped those files over and still managed the ps3 to accept the update?

Anyone can rip open a PUP and change files around because they'll still be encrypted. 3.55 and lower firmwares can accept any firmware that passes that check which was easy to do since the keys are publicly known. And the version.txt can be changed without keys. A lot of things can be "changed" except signed files like selfs without keys.

It's kinda shaping up to be that (for now at least) if there is going to be a 3.66 CFW, it'll be a Frankenstein kinda deal, but unless we* get the keys you'll need to be on 3.55 or lower to install, though I hope this proof of concept evolves into a true 3.66cfw.. I'm wanting to be able to pop Portal 2 into my PS3 and enjoy it, I'm also going to want to be able to play Operation Raccoon City when it drops in november, every month that goes by just means the dev's are closer to getting the kits needed to make the updates come with 3.60, so it's straining my resolve to keep my jail broken console for all my homebrew, and the convenience of being able to take all my games with me when I travel without dragging umpteen-million discs

*: By we.. I mean the scene, as I'm useless in tracking down that stuff.

Sad because consoles with 3.56+ won't be able to use a CFW without a NAND/NOR flasher or someway to patch the whole thing about update pups being checked now. But I think the patching part is easy. And we apparently have a way to get all the keys inside lv0, just need someone to do it...with a dual NOR PS3...who's willing to sacrifice a PS3 with the potential of it getting bricked...and still needing a NOR flasher to put the per console info on the second NOR as well. Wow that sounds like a lot, no sarcasm. I hope someone is willing to do it.
