I found out a way to load XML code from devices other than /dev_flash/:

    Code:
    <Query class="type:x-xmb/folder-pixmap" key="some_item" attr="some_item" src="xmb://localhost/<device location>/<directory path to xml file>/some.xml#seg_some_item_dir"/>
    Where <device location> is something like "dev_usb000" or "dev_hdd0"

I'm using this in the next version of my HFW so the users can easily add items to the XMB without having to edit "/dev_flash/". Its will be a good feature especially since they'll be able to update to newer revisions of this great XMB Manager without having to downgrade and re-install a new pup.

Not only would this make testing quicker, you could theoretically outsource the entire XMB to a USB device(well except for system settings)

Great info! Thanks for sharing ps3hen. that will make it a lot easier for 4.00 users, great stuff.

Also this a great new way of testing newest mods quickly, just set your system up to read the seg_package_fixed from usb xml instead, like a permanent firmloader for one file! Brilliant!

If only we could get copy working, then you could use a folder on hdd and copy the new xmls there, i assume 4.00HFW will need to have a usb stick inserted always with correct xmls on it?

P.S. can you confirm if its still all working on 4.00 or not, nothing major changed in newer rcos yet?

I have finished the HFW version 3, right now its a matter of putting warnings all over it adding credits and uploading it. I can confirm 0.09 beta does work on 4.00 natively with my already ported .rco files from version 0.06 beta.

I have made an allowance for loading xml mods off the HDD in the XML files, in anticipation of the copy feature. That way people can upgrade with out installing another pup. Well much to my surprise the usb stick only needs to be inserted at the time the XMB loads, I assume that's because it's copied to the ram. Once the xmb is loaded, the usb is not needed until the XMB is loaded again. Like when quitting from an application to the xmb or when the PS3 boots.

I think you could even call it "warning.pup" and people will still not pay any attention to it and install without reading the instructions!!

Nice work with the 4.00HFW v3, I will be trying it soon as i get my flasher.

BTW: i assume all segments load off flash but it just checks for the new segs on usb, so ps3 still works fine with no usb drive, just new features dont show correct? If that is correct then it is really cool, its like booting using USB stick to show custom itmes, and without usb stick for standard XMB . Bit like using normal memory stick as a kind of JB dongle for custom features.

DAM, now youve told everyone about this we wont be able to sell 32MB usb sticks with a few xmls on them and call them "USB development tools"!

Ive uploaded newer 4.00OFW xmls here for anyone who wants a look. http://www.mediafire.com/?et7gb7gszywslj3

I am on CFW 3.55. What's the advantage upgrading to 4.00HFW?

Here's a ? for ya.. I know I will no longer be able to use MM, but will I lose all my PSN games already downloaded with the original install pkg folder?

I think so , or if not there is way to transfer a backup of cracked psn (ReactPSN cracked only, not Duplex/exetrimall) games from 3.55 to a 4.00 console with data transfer option, use google or someone esle will help you here, make a thread in help section.

I am more on the network admin side of things but would love to take a stab at some of this work. Good job! I consider myself pretty savy. You guys have really sparked my interest. Would you happen to have the full FW 4.00? I might have some surprises soon...

Yes you should try doing this yourself and helping us if you want, its relatively easy, quite simple when you learn how the ps3 xmls work , I only know a small bit so far but even that can be powerful. and now Andreus is really adding alot to this too as he has a way deeper understanding of the xmls than me. I suspect this is going to grow into something every CFW user would consider using, I hope so anyway!

As for full FW , do you mean a dump or the pup file, search for "dump upsilon" on google and you will get his 4.00 OFW dev_flash dump. If you mean Ps3hens 4.00HFW he has posted links to 2.5 but you should just wait for 3.0!

I have made a rebug 3.55.2 mfw pup for myself with XMBM v0.09 built in, anyone else can do that them selves quite easily buy using Ps3 MFW builder swap dev_flash files task. just swap the 4 files in latest release.
Here is the paths to add to the task so it will prompt you for correct files. just copy and paste them in

    dev_flash/vsh/resource/explore/xmb/category_game_tool2.xml
So no big reason to make a specific task for this really unless someone has some spare time and likes making task etc. A specific task tcl that patches the 3.55 pup would make it easier for noobs to do but Im not going to do it at this stage yet. maybe down the road for version 1.00 or something

I think we should move all "title_rsc" and "info_rsc" entries for XMBM out of rcos and just have them in plaintext inside the xmls from now on, it will save any other languages needing to be moddifed, if anyone wants to tranlate it down the line we can leave the title_rsc in the xmls but comment them out like this. (p.s. if anyone on here wants to translate to thier own language then we can do it different?)

    <!-- <Pair key="title_rsc"><String>msg_title_example</String></Pair> -->

EDIT: PS3hen , I have an idea for you, What if you built the xmls for these hacks into another file that can be copied onto ps3 4.00, would it possible to maybe put the xmls in a save file / other text file and copy it onto ps3, then use that path for the xmls, so that it can be updated by copying a new save file over etc? What you think? I assume the file must have an .xml suffix for it to work, just an idea i had, not actually sure if there are any xmls in any savefiles/otherfiles that could be modded somehow, maybe by copying over some psp/mini saves (something copyable must contain an xml somewhere in the whole ps3 system!)

    P.S. Check your PM Ready0000

    @DeViL303
I love the work that you, andrew, ps3hen, bitsbubba and others are doing improving the XMBFM. It is fantastic!!!

I have modified the 0.8b and made it look more cleaner and replaced the link to this forum:
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/xikxdx

    Reasons of the changes:
    1. The idea of the link to this forum is nice, but I find that a link to youtube xl is more useful on the PS3.
(anyway I think that the kind of information in this forum is intended for a PC user)

    2. Remarked/removed the WIP icons because they are not very helpful, the XMBFM looks more cluttered, and the '★ Install Package Files' (which is one of the frequently used functions) was harder to access.

I really like what you are doing... just think that it should be simple and clean. Keep your great work!! THANKS!!!!

good stuff, yes im already working on adding lots of web links in a new category called "Websites" or "favourites" or something, youtube and other can be included there no problem, the info page is just a POC beause i plan to get an info page hosted with links to update pkgs and other homebrew so it can all be downloaded and updated through XMBM, it will take me a while to impliment this though.

I can see why you would remove the WIP icons, I would too! , I just included them in the hope of giving people ideas etc, like you!

P.S. Maybe we could include a new WIP category down the bottom for anyones new ideas so that they are still included but not in the way ?
