It's still a breakthrough. They somehow figured out how to modify game saves.
I'm not going to get too excited until I see a game list. Remember that older games saved files were unlocked prior to trophies arriving (saves not tied to a specific console/user ID). If it only allows cheats on those than its not that big of a deal.
I dont think it would be...
Gamesaves hold information for Single Player campaign, customizations etc....
But when it comes to online gameplay, Im pretty certain, most "Popular" games, store details online....
hence why you can log into any ps3 and all your details are there...
For those interested, Game Genie seems to have updated their website quite a bit. First, a few tweets that answer a few questions that came about in this thread.
The Game Genie @TheGameGenieUSA:
Cheats will work on unlocked saves. The program also has a hex decimal editor.
We don't anticipate it firmware blocking the game genie, for it doesn't affect online game play, and most trophies will be disabled.
You can get some trophies, but cheats like unlock all levels will not gain you the trophy for beating the game.
The game genie will not affect online multiplayer...the cheats will primarily be for single player and campaign modes
To be more specific, no, trophies will not be automatically unlocked upon using the game genie...
There is some good and bad news in that, depending on what your looking for. Online multiplayer should be safe. The way the game genie works may tie into the same kind of thing the previous trophy hacks did. While you were able to give yourself 100% in everything, they didn't sync properly, and they were obviously faked. I doubt they've added some feature in to block trophies, as a "service" to the various people completely obsessed with a virtual shiny trophy. However, if the cheats only work on unlocked saves, that really puts a hamper on everything the device can do. Your not going to find very many newer games that have unlocked saves. And Sony can easily make all games require locked saves. It could be as simple as a small title update. Not that their going to waste their time updating older games to stop single-player cheating, but they can make sure no newer game has unlocked saves. So while the device may work on new firmwares, you'll be using it strictly on older firmware games. It's not all bad, because cheats are a way for a lot of people to make another run through an old game, or finish a game they couldn't beat because they were stuck or it was to hard.
It may give us an easier interface than the older cheat devices on 3.41 and 3.55, but it also won't be any more powerful than the save game editing you have seen done on various Scene sites. I have a strong suspicion that this may be nothing more than a rehasing of the older devices, that were supplied with "cheats" by the hard work of gamers not associated with the company. From the looks of it, it will work on newer firmware, not just 3.55, so it could be interesting to check out the device upon launch, and see what mechanism it uses to bypass protection on newer firmwares. While its a very small thing, its better than nothing. At the very least maybe those on OFW will get a new way to edit their save games, and enjoy a few of the features those on custom firmware get to take advantage off.
They also started a section on their site for Codes. There are quite a bit of games on there:
...As I was writing this post, the page with the list of ps3 cheats seemed to disappear. That, or I'm an idiot and can't find it anymore. All I remember seeing is a large selection of some of the Final Fantasy Games
I apologize for not copying them as soon as I saw them. They had a lot of games on there, maybe 100 or more. I don't remember seeing any newer games though.

Not most, a few. ;] This is the main reason why dev blocking saves.

I don't understand why GG will work only on "unlocked" saves. I don't see any technical reason why only on them.
Also I'm curious, if this will work on 3.60+ how they realize memory patching or executables patching without hacked fw and without magic keys.
slighty off topic but i find this interesting and thought I would share.
does anyone remember the first hack for the Ps2?, we use to use a genie disk to boot the ps2 and with a neo key we use to be able to open the ps2 drive, swap the genie disk for a burnt backup and the system continued to boot the game, this was before the 44/46 wire modchips(They got sued big time) and then the missah's with the 14/16 wire modchips(who were also sued).
Im just wondering what exploits this versions gonna bring.
P.S. Sorry, after thinking about this for a while, the disk may have been an action replay?... same thing different name i think. apologies for my babble..

It's just a save editor. There is the possibility it injects a code loader into the save to accomplish cheats, but most likely it is just simple hex edits that change lives or ammo and such. I am pretty sure it does all of it's work on the pc. They give you a pen drive with the software (notice it says windows only, mac and linux aren't compatible, and if it was just a rebrand of a ps3 cheat dongle, your os wouldn't matter), the software downloads previously hacked saves and allows you to edit your own saves. When you are done, you transfer them back to your ps3 using the pen drive like you would any other save.

Here's my theory, it can't perfectly "resign" the saves and games which require a locked save will know something is up and will not allow you to use it either preventing you from transferring or telling you the save is corrupt or something. Therefore creates a problem of ownership.
Edit:
Also as for trophies, it makes sense. Trophy data isn't stored in the save so you would have to edit that to auto-get trophies. And you get trophies when it sees certain flags, wheras editing the save would most likely bypass the flag meaning you don't get the trophy. Example. if you must kill 500 zombies to get a trophy and you edit your save to 500 then you won't get it because the flag is gotten upon getting 500 whereas the next number you receive is 501. Therefore you've skipped the trophy. Same thing for levels. You receive the trophy by unlocking all levels, not by having all levels unlocked.
Of course I my reasoning could be wrong, but I did have similar experiences when playing around with snes9x. A good example is super mario rpg where the leveling system is kind of like my trophy explanation. Giving your characters max experience made them skip levels and miss out on the benefits.

Your theory seems perfectly reasonable, AlbedoAtoned. My post-surgery hospital rambling was a lot of speculation and, hoping there might be a hidden gem in this release. As you said, unless there is some big factor we aren't seeing, its just simple hex editing. Those of us who were playing games when Game Genie was the thing to have, would remember the similar nature of the older devices. A savvy developer could determine all the necessary signatures and "keys" necessary to unlock or lock saves, whether through a pseudo-lock resigning process that also gets incorporated into a custom firmware, or an actual discovery of the decryption/encryption method. There may be a similiar method that can be used to dump the unlocked game data through a memory dump, but this is all speculation because I've never really looked into how the ps3 manipulates the save game system. While its possible GameGenie has created a savvy system that can properly "unlock" ps3 game data for modification, I would almost guarantee it doesn't because of the descriptions through the twitter feeds and their web page. They could very well found a way to individually tie each new game to the user account, and allow for manipulation, but we will have to wait and see.
I am curious on what kind of protection this has, and whats stopping people from using their own usb drive. I highly doubt there's an embedded microcontroller system; it could very well be a plain old Game Genie branded flash drive, that fully depends on the PC software for operation. They could tie some sort of activation criteria into their PC software, or even a simple cd key. I suppose they could even require your computer to be connected to the internet for the entire editing process. Nonetheless, I would be shocked if there isn't a publicly available "crack(ed)" version of the software sometime after release.
I don't think the flash drive is proprietary. From the sound of it, the flash drive is merely to make it possible to even the biggest noob. As long as you have a computer, you can use the software. The software is probably just one exe or installer or perhaps it is portable and can be run from the flash drive just as easily as from the desktop. I have noticed other cheat devices often come with flash drives so their customers don't have to already own one or buy one separate.
