I'd rather have this thread opened aiming to have some questions asked and answered.

I've read a lot of posts on other sites which are clearly misleading for the major part of the user base and it is better to keep it open for discussions here.

There are videos and half-truths about running DEX firmware. Although it was pointed out earlier in this thread what a DEX can and can't do, some continue to speculate how it will allow 3.55CFW backup functions + 4.** game support.

Regular users would expect to load their backups the usual way (via a manager), but it won't happen. It was explained (year or so ago, and now again) that ps3gen tools (for DEX) require a USB HDD dedicated for this (4 games in separate partitions/images) + fake-signed executables (self/sprx/eboot).

You cannot patch the 3.60+ DEX firmwares with peek/poke/etc to allow 'extended' functions like backup loading from HDD, because we don't have the keys to create a firmware (same as the regular OFW firmwares). Yet it is possible to use /app_home to make a game boot from desired location if you find your way with the target manager app on your PC.

You also can't burn DVDs/BDs with 3.60+ games, because the sony tools require that you provide a fself (not retail/dumped from original disc) executables (eboot/self/sprx files) to create a MasterDisc (which would work on DEX). To create such files one would need the 3.60+ keys. Since older keys up to 3.56 are available - you can create masterdiscs for all games you have, which don't require 3.60+.

Same as above goes for creating BD-EMU images (they are essentially masterdiscs) for 3.60+ games. You can't create bdemu image, because the files you provide must be valid and you can't create them (read above for DVD/BD discs).

You cannot create a PKG from a 3.60+ disc game (you wish you could use ebootFIX), but that's not possible because the disc files are still encrypted with 3.60+ and you need to decrypt them to elf so you can create a fake_npdrm_self (eboot.bin).

You can't play 00.09 - 03.55 games on DEX unless you know how to decrypt/unself and make_fself all eboot/sprx/self files for a game and then create USB image (1 of 4) to use with the DEX build-in BDEMU (using Sony ps3gen tools) or use /app_home.

The good thing is that you can play your original PS3 Game discs (00.09-04.10), use Showtime (if properly prepared in a pkg), use emulators by Squarepusher, use Comgenie's File Manager or multiMAN(without backup loading) (if properly prepared in a pkg).

The Blu-ray Movie playback is restricted with DEX firmware, so you won't be able to play movies.

I know many skip that part for some reason, but that's not having mM on a DEX and requires a lot of work, which normal users won't find straightforward. Not to mention the usage of some Sony tools, which may lead to other consequences to the user.

A developer doesn't really need a DEX to create a homebrew. Great apps like Showtime, Emulators, Text Viewers, File Managers, ThatOtherDev's Games, multiMAN and a lot more didn't require their coders to have a DEX.

Hopefully this brief explanation would allow more people to know what to do and how to do it. Sadly this CEX2DEX stuff brings cool features, but features that most people won't find really useful and easy to get to.

To know all that stuff only requires some reading and comprehension of the docs/specs - you don't need a DEX to know how it works.

Thanks DeanK for the comprehensive explanation on where this could and can't go. I appreciate it. Now I don't have to view this thread again and continue to wonder what EXACTLY it will and won't do.

    Sincerely,

All I have to say is that this should have been out months ago and none of the confusion or misinformation would still be floating about.

A word of warning here guys DO NOT believe anything you read on cex->dex from anyone. I know I will catch some fire on this from some and probably step on a few toes, but when it comes to this extremely touchy subject, no one can be trusted in any way, shape or form. AND I mean NO ONE. Everyone has their own agenda whether it be getting in good with some people, staying in good with some people or some deep seeded paranoia of $ony. It's everyone for themselves when it comes to this subject. Don't take anything at face value, even from "trusted devs" (sorry guys, but you know it's true) and use your common sense to see through the bullshit and you should be able to put 2+2 together pretty easily.

I also don't believe you'll see a user friendly version of this because, quite simply, I don't believe one is possible. I will say, from my limited knowledge and research on the subject that I'm excited for this to be finally out and even though I've moved onto the darkside (360) of things, I'm extremely excited to see what new developments, if any will arise over the next couple of weeks. I will also say that, from what I've read and been told, there is more than one version of cex->dex and could quite conceivably be like TX's Fusion for the 360 where TX has openly admitted to locking some of the features of the dev side of their "custom kernel" for whatever reasons. The information is out there as to what a dex can and can't do, there was a chart floating around (official $ony document) with the different versions of dex's and what they were capable of and while some stuff rings true as to what was said here, A LOT does not (from all sides).

A very guarded congrats from me to all of you!!

(sorry if I broke any rules G, haven't been around much lately. feel free to slap away!!)

Thank you Deank, yes you're right, people saying bye bye dongles with this CEX to DEX conversion are wrong !!!
You can't say bye bye dongles until the day some one will leak the new public keys 3.60 & higher !
Without public keys there will be no free solution to 3.6+ games !! at least some one find an alternative.

By the way Deank, I have a question to you !
You knew with the TrueBlue dongle it's possible to read burned 3.6+ games prepared by the trueblue team & sold only from china like PES 2012, Batman arkham city & 7 other games !!

Those BluRay disks are burned so how could a PS3 read a burned bluRay game directly rom the XMB menu without having it's BD drive firmware's modified ??!! What they use exactly ??

Than, if trueblue team dosen't have 3.6+ public keys & use a special exploit to make it's patchs (like said team E3), how could they get those disks working without such keys ???!!!

thanks in advance for the answer & keep the good work with MultiMAN, it's the best ever homebrew in the PS3 scene !!

You're in the clear - don't worry about it!

Also, as for trust, that is a very touchy subject, especially in this scene, so yes, you DO have a point with regards to being wary/vigilant in such situations, and most people will agree with you on the trust aspect of this scene.

Dark Scyth regarding DeanK putting his point across (see the comment below)
    I second that.

It's quite ironic to see someone saying the word dumbass when they don't understand the difference between your and you're and I mean every post. You also say that you're not trying to be dramatic but besides Gregory, I honestly don't know ANYONE that has been this dramatic posting on here. If you have something to say, get your point across, instead of whatever the fuck this is with that shit cocky attitude. If people brick, too bad for them. That's all it really needed to say.

    @Deank

You know the right way to get your post across and explained it very well and for that, I thank you.

in these days this i think we wont see any progress on PS3 scene like playing 3.6x on CFW 3.55 because i can see most of the Devs are busy with making a dongles and eboots .some of them give us a free eboots just to advertise their product thanks to them btw. and some of them love free work thanks to them as well ..
there are a lot of info about how dongles works etc if they could just read it i am sure they are gonna make eboots to be playable on 3.55 CFW without needing a dongle, but who is gonna make it while they are all busy with making dongles .i am not against this one but just bare with us a little because there are a lot of us cannot get or reach this dongles .
anyway i am just enjoying old games and TheOtherDev games and other Homebrew and i lovin it .
IOM free work and free stuff is more excited than others remember the PS2 scene it does tells a lot many Homebrew and ppl still using it .

and this whole conversion is also useless none of them make a sense.

beside sorry for my English .

I know there are ways to disable cinavia in CFW, but is there an option to do this with DEX firmware?

I think that TB team not using the method A like E3 Team stated, but rather then they have at least the appldr keys from 3.60+ so they could decrypt 3.60+ games then resign it with their own key to protect their work.
Also not only TB, E3 have this keys some of well known devs have it already long time ago but they will not share such info for some reasons.
Also about TB special disk, maybe the TB FW and Payload be able to bypass the BD-ROM authentication and make the backup disk looks like the original one like what modchips did in another consoles like PS2,Wii,GameCube,Dreamcast and other disk passed consoles.
BTW. TB had been released longer time ago before the public announcement and i had an older list of special BD disk that can run with it before the world wide release, and this list contains a lot of 3.55, 3.56 games that already been patched and can be run without any dongle yet.
So the TB dongle it self was older than we think and it was could "JB2" only maybe it means the Second Generation or Jail-Break devices, and i think it was released firstly to just run 3.55,3.56 then be extended to support newer firmwares up to date or why they had made a special disks for older games that already patched to run on 3.55 and 3.56 without any dongle yet, from business point of view there is no reasons to do this since no body will be happy to pay money on useless disks when he could play this games from HDD and keep his console leaser better, load faster and save his money also.
