nah, I got a call from a friend and he said his computer would not recognize his external hdd, he was going to format it back. he originally formatted it with the ps3 to use with ps3gen. but now he wanted to format it back, but it is not showing up for him to have the option.
I don't know since I have not done it so I was seeing if anyone else has or if he is just being dumb.
Sadly I haven't done it myself as well, so I don't know exactly how to deal with that situation, but based on my knowledge, the HDD Should be recognized via Disk Management and then hopefully you should be able to format it from there.

He is not being dumb. I wasted like 1 hour to get it back to ntfs/fat32. Finally I attached the usb stick/drive to a PC with Windows XP and voala - formatted it. My previous attempts were with Vista and Win7 and failed, while with XP all went well.
You can also try to right click on "Computer"-> Manage -> Disk Management and try to format the disc from there (didn't work for me on vista/7).

wow, something everyone should think about before formatting a big drive, they might not be able to get it back. I already heard some people used a their TBs external for it. hopefully they can fix it.
I remember doing that a year ago when I was playing with ps3gen tools and after 10 attempts I managed to get the right timing (plug the usb -> press format) but it took a lot of time. Then I found out that WinXP-way works really fast. I actually had one usb stick sitting around for 6 months, formatted by ps3gen which I was unable to format to FAT32 and then I remembered that long ago I used winxp for the task and it worked.

You should have the following in hand:
- Official DEX 3.55 firmware PUP with Downgrade Support/Rogero DEX 3.55 v2 firmware PUP [3.55+ DEX Downgrader, NoBD, install retail PKG, LV1, Peek & Poke] [recommended]
- multiMAN 04.04.04 (use this whilst on DEX 3.55)
- Your flash dump (e.g. 20120729-215658-FLASH-NOR-FW3.55.NORBIN)
1. Install either PUP mentioned above (Rogero's one recommended as a fail-safe measure) if you are NOT on DEX 3.55
2. Install multiMAN if you haven't installed it nor you have version 04.04.04, as version 04.04.04 has improved flash memory-writing capabilities
3. In mmOS, select the flash dump, and follow the prompts/instructions
4. Exit multiMAN to XMB (DO NOT SHUTDOWN/RESTART the console via multiMAN at all)
5. Shutdown the console via the XMB and NOT VIA PRESSING THE POWER BUTTON
6. Restart the console by pressing the POWER BUTTON
7. Install any CEX 3.55 PUP via XMB (KMEAW is the most popular one, and Rogero's 3.55 v3.4 CEX PUP is only ideal for FSM-recoverable-bricking purposes - http://www.ps3crunch.net/forum/threa...6086#post46086 & http://www.ps3crunch.net/forum/threa...5938#post45938), follow the instructions, and make sure that you uncheck "Turn off system after update".
My console got bricked while moving back to cex.Is it nesscassary to follow the second tutorial even if the console was not downgraded with a hardware flasher and which fw is "3.55 CEX Firmware PUP with prepatched lv1 (no syscon hash checks)".

Yes it is - especially when you try to go back to DEX again, as you'll brick your console if you don't reset the syscon hashes and you go ahead with the DEX conversion again.
On the PS3
2. Switch off ps3 from power cord
3. Put the USB Dongle with service mode payload in the right usb port
4. Put power cord in the console
5. Press power button followed quickly with eject button, the console should boot, and then reboot. (if the beeps continue it's normal)
6. Remove service dongle
7. Put the USB Pen with the 2 files inside in the right usb port
8. Power on the PS3. If all went well you shall see the ps3 reading stuff in the usb pen, and the hard drive of ps3 working, wait for the console to power off.
9. Remove the USB PEN (you will have an UPDATER_LOG.TXT in the Pen with the details)
10. Power on the PS3
11. At this point you can check if the console boot up and its inside factory mode (red square box in the bottom left of the screen)
12. Power off the PS3
On the computer
13. All you need now is to get out of Factory Mode, so put lv2diag.self file 2 in a FAT32 blank USB Pen
On the PS3
14. Put the USB Pen in the right port with the file already on it
15. Power on (the console will power off automatically)
16. Power again and should be ok
I have tried to unbrick my PS3 with this Dongle, it did not work.

Whoa whoa whoa - no need to have a panic attack - oldhag270 dumped the DEX-modified flash, and then with C2D.exe, he modified that dump to a CEX-based TargetID and flashed that dump back onto the flash memory via mmOS - read here: http://www.ps3crunch.net/forum/threa...7562#post47562
Also, based on PS3Crunch's IP address logs, you're based in Iran if I am right, so based on the games that you have in terms of game region (BLUS/BLES etc) in THAT country as obviously the country you're in is not considered "a mainstream gaming-targeted country" (i.e. gaming companies not tending to create a dedicated region code/similar system for that country (unless they do, in which I apologize if I've made an error here), unlike Japan/Europe/America, which have their dedicated region codes), you'll need to modify the dump with the (ideally) matching TargetID.
Lastly, what's your PS3 model number/console type (NOR/NAND)?
Yeah! My bad English shows that I'm not a native and I'm from IRan! DDD But We love The West! Ok... The Model is : SLIM 320 gig... and the serial in the back of the Console is : 03-27457128-5639436-cech-2506A We use any region here in IRan... But pay attention!!! I do not have anything From CEX3.55 !!! any back up! not flash dump , anything!!!! how I can modify it?! I am on DEX 3.55!!!! of course, all of the PS3 slims have NOR! as I know... Where can I find the Target ID? can you lead me step by step? EXP :1.do bla bla .... 2- do bla bla.... tahnk you.
