Sony: 'Very high interest' in PS3 Super Slim from Xbox 360 owners
To support console through at least 2015...
According to a Sony exec, the PS3 'Super Slim' provides 'a good opportunity for those types of consumers to come over and own a second console'.
In an interview with Gamespot, SCEA marketing execuctive John Koller stated that those picking up the upcoming new PS3 'Super Slim' model are "most likely... not PS3 owners yet".
According to him, they are receiving an influx of interest from Xbox 360 gamers who are looking to buy a second console.
"We have seen a very high interest rate from Xbox 360 consumers wanting to purchase a second console," he continued. "We've held up Uncharted 3 as our flagship product over the last year and it's a good opportunity for those types of consumers to come over and own a second console in their household."
Koller calls this particular brand of gamer a ‘lapsed console owner’. Also, he likens the interest in the console to that of the Xbox during the previous gen.
"We saw the same kind of thing happen in reverse during the PS2 years when a lot of PS2 consumers said they wanted to get an Xbox because of Halo and some other games," he continued. "So we think the strategy works and it's a good one."
Also, Koller reaffirmed that Sony is set to continue supporting PS3 for "the next few years", before promising an "incredible lineup" of software...
A lot of great content is coming. And over the next 2-3 years, the PS3 has got an incredible lineup. That consumer coming in this fall is going to really have an opportunity to have great content and what we believe to be the best content in the industry. Yeah, we watch what the competitors do, but we don't make decisions based on what they do. We like our position.
The Super Slim PlayStation 3 goes on sale across the NA and Europe next week.
How should a Super Slim provide "a good opportunity for those types of consumers to come over and own a second console" more than a old slim model? Because it's 5 cm smaller?
They sed a lot of things
"we'll drop the price", they didn't (for economical reasons)
"we'll add ps2 compatibility", they didn't (for economical reasons)
"Cross Game Chat is not possible on PS3", they add it as an optional Playstation Plus feature (for economical reasons)
They removed otheros (for economical reasons)
They introduced "PSN Pass" (for economical reasons)
They reduced to 2 the game sharing of psn games (for economical reasons)
They wrote a new TOS as we can't sue them anymore if we want use PSN

They allowed 1 single PSN account for each console (for economical reasons)
They introduced a new storage card (for economical reasons)

While the executive makes some points, Brenza shot many of them down. I was one of those who owned a first model PS2 flip top w/ swap magic (until my brother "sold" it to a lady for $10 because he couldn't get it to work by burning a game and starting the console with the Backup....) Swap Magic is apparently very high-end technology, so much so, that my brother, a RN and FPN, can't perform a simple disk swap. He makes plenty of money, so I don't even know why he sold for $10.
LMAO, what the hell is this Koller guy smoking? The shit that's been coming out of his mouth the last couple of days, he'd better lay off the hookers and blow for a while.....
A re-designed version of the ps3 isn't going to make me go out and buy it. Price drop--maybe....but the same shit for more $$$'s, he can shove it up his ass. I'll keep my rgh for now, thank you very much Mr. Koller.
