Sony: PS Vita and PS3 cross-play 'easily' rival Wii U
Sony exec believes so.
SCEA’s John Koller says Cross Play, Cross Controller and Cross Save show the combination of PlayStation 3 and Vita is as compelling as the Wii U.
In an interview with Engadget, SCEA executive John Koller, says almost all PlayStation Vita owners also have PlayStation 3s, a combination it claims gives the Wii U a run for its money.
However, unlike Nintendo, he isn’t keen on pushing players to embrace the two-screens life with every game.
“We tell our PlayStation fans all the time that what the Wii U is offering is something that Vita and PS3 can do quite easily,” the executive told Engadget.
“It’s dependent on the content. So we need to make sure the content isn’t force fed,” he said.
“And, to us, making sure that the gamer receives the right type of experience is what’s most important. So we’re gonna pick our spots, but that technology does certainly exist here.”
Koller also added that Sony has no immediate plans to bundle its home and portable consoles together as a single-package Wii U competitor, however, it will consider doing so in the future as "retail asks for it all the time."
“In the meantime, you look at the Vita consumer and a very high percentage – almost all of them – own a PS3. So you see that crossover works,” he noted.
Well, it looks like he forgot to keep in mind the following: (Hint: Prices)
Koller gave no specific figures on PS3/Vita cross over, but those who don't own either Sony system would need to pony up for a markedly higher price point than the Wii U. The new model of PlayStation 3 and a Vita together would cost at least $520 at their current prices ($270 and $250, respectively), whereas the Wii U bundled with a GamePad starts at $300.

now i know why their finance will collapse soon cause they could easily crushed WiiU via improvin RemotePlay even with old PSP3000s which cost 99 EUR here and most of PS3 users would buy it if at least exclusives would support this feature like mirror in F1 or as 2nd LCD in Lair...
EDIT: was just thinkin bout it and imagine that PSP could display journal in Uncharted trilogy or map/inventory in FPS games like Killzone 2,3 and Resistance trilogy or that mirror feature in racing games like GT5 and Motorstorm trilogy...they should threw not only PR department out...
Pretty much he's correct in his idea that psvita/ps3 could compete against wiiu well. The problem he and many others miss is that ps3 and psvita don't come together. One has to buy both in order to gain the possible benefits. With Wii U , the controller comes bundled with the wii u itself. Furthermore because a user is guaranteed to have the wii u controller (unless it dies or something), developers can generally use the tablet to it's fullest potential without locking out customers that don't have it (since they should have at least one unless it broke or something). Now with the vita ps3 setup developers either have to resort to putting in negligible benefits so those without the vita won't be too left out or create a game where the player is disadvantaged without a vita or outright left out. It's the same with Microsoft's Smartglass. Both are at a disadvantage because of costs and integration. Chances are that the benefits to the crossplay will be negligible, meaning not much emphasis if any will be placed on it. Good if you don't own a vita or don't care about that kind of thing, bad if you are a multibillion corporation trying to discredit another company when you know you can't provide a similar enough experience without alienating a large portion of your (possible) userbase in the process. They'll be asking why buy a ps3 and vita for watered down wii u gameplay when they can get an enhanced version for half. Best for Sony to sell Playstation (that little box that made them so popular in gaming) and stay out of the Wii TUU business.
