But I see all this competition as a good thing as this is a permanent fix for backups unlike the dongles which rely on software hacks... Hardware hacks are forever unless they comeout with a new ps3 that blocks it..So for people saysing this is no different than a dongle they can kick rocks... this is a permanent fix.... so what about homebrew and game cheats.. Maybe they have a prototype tool that will allow you to connect your bluray drive to a pc and retrieve the dvd key like how the 360 has the ck3 pro and jungleflasher.
I gladly embrace the darkness within

The PS3 and 360 are different. You can't just do that with the tools publicly out right now.

I think It would work as well, the drive connected to an unmarried motherboard wound not read bd dvd but, the drive would still be powered up and able to have functions ran on it such as pulling the key off.... In theory....

The actual key is stored as EID4 and is also encrypted ontop on it. - That part has to be dump, nothing in the drive really matters. -- You can swap drives on the PS3 (slim model) and it will still work.

Dumping EID keys and decrypting it is basically the same as the CEX to DEX just more down the chain in the EID keys.

Over time I am sure you will see more utilities and ways to get the 'drive key' without the need of using CFW as it is done now.

Why? Because we can make the machine do what we want.. we have that level of power with the hack.
Show me ANY console that you can play ISO files on OFW online.
The software on the hardware of these things is about 2 things, the USB2SATA and simulating the commands and info sent back and forth between the motherboard and optical drive.
Unless you believe a bit of software can be coded to sit in the ribbon and do all that AND direct it to the internal HDD on OFW... well we all know that is NOT going to happen don't we.

I didn't read every line because huge blocks of text give me a headache but I think I saw you going on about this being made useless when the cfw comes out and also the DRM haters..
This is for different people than CFW people, this is for people who want to always play their "backups" online.
This WILL be a solution for newer slims very soon. This is FW 'unindependent' meaning it will work on future FWs most likely sooner than Cyberskunk can update his CFW.
This hardware IS necessary to use this hack so is in NO way comparable to TB or Cobra

PS: Just to clarify, this is a TOTALLY different hack to anything that there has been in the PS3 scene before.. Dont compare it to anything in the Wii scene.
This is directly comparable to the same thing in the 360 scene.
One would have suggested that with both disc backups and Jtag/RGH these would have been redundant in that scene also.. but no this is a genuine other option.
Is it one I would choose? Hell no, it bores me senseless but at least it is a genuine hack and NOT just a DRM money making venture.
(BTW I do think the hardware is way overpriced)
Again, everything it does can be done by software only. And I've seen how for most anti-drm people it doesn't matter if it was needed anyway. So let's see, for the past two years we have been able to play backups from Multiman and other backup managers, most with zero problems. And with Cobra we can create create and play iso files and play them. And method to do any of this has been shown to not matter to the anti-drm crowd. When ps1 burned backups became playable some people decided that was enough reason why Cobra didn't matter anymore. It didn't matter that the method was different, but as long as they could pirate it one way it didn't matter. Same thing in the wii scene when the wode was released. You could either try your hand at getting the sd card emulator to work though you had low compatibility. Or you could burn them and use a backup loader. For me neither of these options were viable. As I said compatibility with the free options weren't satisfactory. And my wii doesn't work right with gamecube games. It leaves circular scratches on them making them playable only once. Didn't matter to people. In console scenes open source is rarely about helping others anymore. It's about appearances. As long as one can make themselves look better than somebody else they feel good and the best way for them to do that is for them to put others down. They forget why open source software (and hardware) is good, what makes it so good. To them, they're not reaping the benefits of community. Rather they just use it to attack others.

Again, what I am asking is for the for to be consistent. If Cobra or TB suck because what they can do can be done with software, then this sucks too for the same reason. If they suck because they are closed source then this does too for the same reason. And in the xbox scene there are those that hate commercial modchips. They claim to be open source supporters yet they can't see that many people can enjoy the benefits of open source software through them.

And lastly this being firmware independent is really not worth it. If Sony patches it this can become pretty much worthless. As someone said update to newest firmware, this gets patched, get stuck on ofw. And the other way it can mess up is if Sony starts banning users for it. If you have your account banned, you lose all of the games you bought on psn, and you are again pretty much stuck on a gimped cfw where you may be able to play newer games, but unable to play homebrew (Unless it can play the homebrew in iso form which I think it can, but I still wouldn't say it can until we know for sure).

As was said before I too think it is funny. Before, people were like "Go get the torches and pitchforks, we got ourselves a capitalist!", and now they are "Just shut up and take all of my money!". Whereas before they hated choices now they just seem to love them.

OMG how the hell can you make OFW play ISO files? I'm not going to read anymore other than the first line until you tell me that!
You are totally missing the point of this, play your 'backups' on the latest OFW off a hard drive with access to PSN. Yes I get that Cobra can make and play ISOs, whoopdey doo! Again, ISOs on a hacked machine is trivial.
Hopefully someone with more credibility than I can come and open your eyes that HARDWARE IS NEEDED FOR THIS EXPLOIT TO WORK!!!!!!!
When they do you can post your apology to my ass.. save me chewing on it

Edit: I had a spare 20 minutes so I read through the rest of it..
If done properly this can't be detected, having something that perfectly copies what the optical drive does in place of the optical drive cannot be detected or patched unless they disable the optical drive altogether.
Its how it works with the 360 and its how it works here.
You've taken the most meaningless part of this, the fact it uses ISO format and made it out to be the part people are paying for.. its not! People who buy this want to be on official FW and want to play their backups online. Show me another viable solution to that.. free or paid.

That's not how the game went a few months ago. When TB was here and people complained daily. Before you couldn't play any of the games TB cracked, yet that wasn't enough for them. The HERE AND NOW DIDN'T mean shit when it came to hardware needed or not. Same thing with Cobra.

And CFW is needed at this point. You have to be on 3.55 cfw to get your drive keys. This means that if you aren't on 3.55 or can downgrade to it if you aren't then this is useless to you at the moment. It also means that if you do install it and Sony patches it to not work then it is useless at that moment. And if you get it for psn then that could quickly become irrelevant if it can be detected. It's not a matter of if they can too. All it would take is for them to actually want to and they could do it easily. Sure that could also be patched by this team, but it would also mean a cat and mouse game. And there is always the situation where one either has a choice of updating and losing iso support or staying on their current firmware and losing psn support as well as future game support. They would be in the same boat as someone on cfw. And their support is probably good, but wouldn't you be depending on capitalists like with TB. Instead of waiting for eboots you would be waiting for this team to crack Sony's newest firmware so you can still play iso files (and by extension homebrew if it works as Iso). Personally I hope they succeed, but I think it is a bit foolish to just jump on the "YAY DRM" wagon when for the past year the scene has been adamantly against. And in comparison the risk is far greater. Before if you didn't like Cobra or TB you just revert to KMEAW or Rebug. What about if Sony makes this odde a brick? We would be stuck on ofw having to wait for it to get fixed. It is nice having extra options as well. And with a new cfw possibly around the corner already half of the need will disappear. The other half will only work for this odde if it is not detectable. There's always the risk that one day you go online to find your ps3 was banned for "unauthorized modification" or something similar to that effect. Upon being banned you lose access to all of the games you bought and you can't play online with friends anymore. I'd say wait a bit, find out how stealthy this modchip is first and buy a flasher just in case as well. I'd say the pros and cons haven't shown themselves fully. By Iso files can it play other games like PS1 or PS2? If so that would be a pro, a big one for me. If it is stealthy and doesn't get patched. That would be even better. And if it can play homebrew, that would be the best. If it can't play ps1 and ps2 iso files then that would be a downgrade, at least for me. If it isn't stealthy and becomes a brick frequently that would be strike number two. And if it can't play homebrew, well that is subjective, still I think that would be a deal breaker for most. If everything goes it's way it would be superior to cfw hardware needed or not.

I still think it's funny though the scene has gone from attacking anybody that even thinks of spending a little cash, to bending over for the very same type of people they just vehemently attacked a couple months ago. A couple months ago if somebody released this they wouldn't shut up about how people were betraying the scene for supporting capitalists. Just a few months ago they even attacked Dean simply because he didn't join in their pitchfork parade when Cobra released their version of Multiman. Now these same people just can't wait to buy this odde. And I believe if this odde team can keep up the support they can really help the scene. Part of me wants to see this as a sign that the scene can unify. But the other part knows that their support is double edged. 1. Most people desire drama. Say two bands are friends, their fans though are worst enemies. Worse yet when somebody one camp likes the other band, they are a traitor. This same mindset is present in the ps3 scene. The commercial and the open source cannot work together, not because the developers are enemies, but their fans. The scene has a penchant for picking a side and driving away the other. 2. Once they've gotten rid of one set of developers they will shift allegiance to the other side and attack the other team. Their loyalty is always short lived. And once they've driven this team away we will be left with nobody. Revealing their inconsistency will allow us to protect the scene from their behavior.

You may as well be comparing this to a GBA emulator, you're comparing two totally different things and looking stupid in the process.
Whether TB dumped EBOOTs, had keys, Devnet access or fucked fairies to get their EBOOTs. The simple fact is they wrapped them in their own DRM and locked them to their dongle. If they were smart enough and knew how to make discs properly they would have charged for every single game.. That's a fact!
This exploit absolutely requires you to buy hardware to do it, you buy that hardware and the rest is in your hands.. a game out you want.. buy it, rip it and play, or download an ISO. It doesn't matter its up to you!
I'm done with you, you're obviously just trolling and doing a bad job of it.
