When you say can play all new games via the retail disc does that mean "as of now" or "even for newer firmware requirements in the future"?

If they don't patch new DEX FWs then that is correct.
By patch I mean patch so concerts can't install the FWs

4.25 DEX isn't patched from what I hear, and since dex converts arent really technically full dex cause EID5 isn't changed.

You heard wrong coz there is no and won't be a DEX 4.25
4.30 will be the next one.. around GTA V release most likely. it is patched but not to stop installing on converts.. well not yet anyway.

Even if you changed EID5, Sony could still patch your console.

So, going to DEX seems like quite some risk and time researching (which I don't have because of finals and such).

I wonder now, is there something "better" (i.e. more games available) to the 3.55 TB firmware, but simpler that CEX -> DEX and with easy, no risk rollback to 3.55 KMEAW?

Well, now with all the leaks, BlueDisk, 3KEY, 4.21, Rogero CEX, etc. I'm quite lost. I've been out of here for a while and I'm having difficulties trying to get updated with the current status of "the scene" and all the possibilities we have.

Is there any explanation / place / site / whatever that keeps updated the current status of the PS3 scene where we could read it up? I mean... not disconnected news of keys releases and such, but instead, a more mashed up, interrelated analyisis.

I'm in a very similar position to yourself, but i've been out for 8 months. I knew everything about what was going on up until the TB dongle came out and after a few weeks I couldn't put the time in any more to keep abreast of things.

I'm still not sure what the actual point of converting to a DEX console is ? Does it "just" make it possible to play all games below a certain FW version, without the need for modified eboots etc ? EDIT - done some reading, you can run unsigned code on a DEX console so you don't need to sign anything ?

I'm currently still on KMEAW so I think i'm in a slightly better position than you are. This reminds of the first CFW's came out ages ago, after PSGroove etc, many people just waited and along came KMEAW and most people stuck with that for over a year. Now newer versions are coming out, I'm sure one that everyone's happy with will come out soon enough so I'll be playing the waiting game.
