I never had that problem, but if I remember correctly, I think the remedy is to run boot_gameos from petitboot or there is a bootgameos.pkg. I believe that setting the flag back to boot gameos will allow you to access petitboot.
Have you ever booted up petitboot with a livecd of redribbon already in the drive? Just curious.

No i havent. I think i might need a disk to do it.
thanks heaps that boot game os pkg worked.
Just got fucked over hard again. it worked for a second. i got this message when i partitioned the HDD correctly. but then when i went to go reboot for installation there was no change. I tried again and i got this horrible message again.
OK, the message in the first screeen shot is fine.
You only need to run the create_hdd_region.sh script once. For the 2nd screenshot, there are no sectors left because you have used them all now, so that message is not unexpected. I don't understand why you run it twice. Is that what you did before when you got the screenshot with number of free sector = 0 on the previous page?
Are you running the script again because you plugged in your usb before rebooting and don't get the choice in petitboot to boot red ribbon from the usb? You really should try booting from a live cd or a different usb device. The problem is probably communication with the usb device from petitboot.

Ok so whats happening is i set it all up and it works fine intil i go to reboot after typing create_hdd_region. When i do that, it doesn't prompt me to install linux, it just takes me back to normall petitboot mode.
I am using a CD now and its still not working. What you said about it not having any free sectors makes scense because it means that it did work the first time when i type create_hdd_region. So yes the problem must be the communication between petitboot and the USB but i am using a cd aswell now... why do you think it cant communicate? I only have one iso file on the cd an usb, am i suposed to have more files that that?

What I mean is if you go to the command prompt in petitboot, instead of typing the command for the script "./create_hdd_region.sh", type the command "mount", and it will print on the screen what drives and partitions are mounted/active. This assumes that you put the cd in the drive and plugged in the usb drive from gameos, before booting up petitiboot.
Before that, did you look at the red ribbon cd contents while it was in your pc? You should see directories listed: .disk, doc, etc, live, yaboot. All of them containing files. If you literally have just one iso file on your cd, then you did not burn it correctly.
If you only have one file with an iso extension on your hdd or cd, then that has been your problem all along. An operating system has tons of files, it's easier to manage if they are all rolled into one big file, but it won't run that way. You have to burn it or copy with a program that can burn iso's (it will unroll the big file and burn all the separate files on the disc automatically in the right places). There are plenty of free ones. Imgburn is free and reliable. I think there are instructions on one of the ps3devwiki.com linux pages for installing it to a usb hdd.

redribbon linux-2.6.38-powerpc64-asbestos
redribbon linux-2.6.38-powerpc64-otheros
Boot gameos
Set video mode
Exit to shell
With a livecd (bootable usb similar) inserted I see:
redribbon linux-2.6.38-powerpc64-asbestos.......
redribbon linux-2.6.38-powerpc64-otheros.......
live otheros
live otheros failsafe
live asbestos
live asbestos failsafe
Boot gameos
Set video mode
Exit to shell
Do not exit to shell to install linux. Instead choose live otheros. It will print some messages on screen including system going down. That's ok; petiboot has to be unloaded to load linux. Wait. Then the linux desktop should boot up. There should be a desktop icon for installing linux to your hdd.
Note: You won't have the first two entries that I have until after you install linux to the hdd. Don't have any game controllers plugged into usb when in petitboot. If petitboot hangs going down, unplug all your usb devices (keyboard, mouse, whatever) until the linux desktop loads then plug back in. Some of those messages on the screen are a hell of a lot longer than what I typed in; I'm not typing all that.
