ps3 3k3y news update directly from the team behind it!

It is quickly coming closer to being in full production!

The creators of the upcoming 3k3y (World's First PS3 ODD), an optical disk drive emulator for the Playstation 3 talks about the current status of the device's production

We have been informed about the current status of the long awaited for 3k3y optical disk drive emulator device for Playstation 3, and there is some good news.

Please read what the team said:

    • Final hardware verification will start this week. All parts have been tested on development boards so no surprises are anticipated.
    • While built-in disk ripping does work, it is too slow to be practical and will not be present. There is another way which is much faster and can most likely be delivered in a future software update, but we will not have time to verify this before launch. So we decided to remove built-in disk ripping from the feature list and put it on the WIP list.
    • We have designed and completed software and a add-on board for connecting a PS3 drive to a PC via USB in order to dump games. This add-on board will be a part of the 3k3y kit.
You can also view other video's and get more info about the wonderful upcoming 3k3y device by visiting thier official site which is linked below.

    Thumbs up

With all the new hacks/patchs/CFW & with MultiMAN & regarding the possibility to access PSN using new 4.30 CFWs, I dont think their 3K3Y will have such success like the Xk3y did !!
But if they found a way to dump & emulate the firmware directly from the 4.++ OFWs & if their gadget dump the PS3 300+ (3K) BluRay disk per key !!! That time the "3k3y" will be a great solution to all PS3 3K owners !!!
Hope they could do that in the near futur !! may be in 2013 who knew !!
    Thanks for the news

Dont think this will be of any great use to us anymore as we now have most new games working via cfw.

Even if it does work with or somehow patches on the fly ofw, with a hefty price tag and the possibility of being banned online, i dont see this selling too much. With that big case its in, maybe the heat it generates can fry an egg for you too, so its more bang for your buck.

I don't get this. Why in every thread, whether it be the Xk3y for the 360 or the PS3 does someone have to say "Oh no, don't use this. You might get banned!" It's not as prevalent about the ps3 (obviously, it hasn't come out yet) but is crazy how many people spout this on the 360 side, saying it's safer to go with a flashed drive and backup discs.

Bottom line is that the xk3y has been around for a long time now and while I agree that going online carries certain risks but this is no more dangerous than any other method used out there.

There´s always the risk of brick when upgrading firwmwares on OFW or CFW.

But, at least with OFW... Sony will deny it...

Whats not to get? Its most likely more expensive then any other backup method. Theres always a possibility of getting banned online. And judging by the picture it looks huge. The question is, does it get hot enough to cook an egg?

It's not really any less secure from bans either. At least, we haven't seen any proof to this yet. It's main selling points are

    1. Allows you to play backups on ofw.
    2. Play ps1 and ps2 backups.
    3. Play on psn.

    Counter arguments are
    1. A firmware is a firmware. OFW is less featured than cfw meaning this is making up for ofw's shortcomings. It also doesn't do everything cfw does. You're paying more for less.

    2. Cobra does that too and it's cheaper. It also does everything else pretty much that cfw does since it is a cfw as well. Compared to this, you are adding functionality rather than taking it away. And when Cobra releases their new cfw it will be like taking candy from a baby as it will do everything this odde does at a third of the price.

    3. It could end up just as dangerous to play online as with cfw. And that could mean that you are just as likely to get banned with odde as with cfw. Or taken the other way just as unlikely to get banned with cfw as with odde. With cfw you can rip your discs and play other homebrew. For some it gives you more legitimacy. With this odde you can't rip your discs, and playing backups is all it does. If you ask me, that makes the odde more likely to be targeted than cfw for bans.

Addition. InB4 someone says "what about users who can't use cfw?" You need cfw to retrieve the drive key. That'd be like needing your xbox to be rgh'd in order to use any of it's odde's.
