Hello again to ya all, i have been running into a weird problem lately.
The problem is, I was playing Sleeping Dogs from my "USB 3.0" 2TB verbatim hdd. I had to do something and I paused the game and went away. I came back after like 15 minutes and resumed the game. But then I noticed that no audio was coming out and the subtitles weren't showing. I paused the game again and tried to resume again but got stuck on the pause menu. I decided it was a minor bug and tried to turn off the ps3 by holding the ps button down. After what seemed like ages the options came and i selected quit game and then the system turned off with a three beep.
I left that aside and started playing FIFA 13 (from the external hdd too). Something came up, AGAIN, and I paused the game. Came back after more than 10min and tried to resume it, guess what? No commentary, no player indicator, no radar, no player name bar... tried to turn it off, and turned out to be the same as sleeping dogs. It really bugged me and i tried another of my games, NFS:HP. Same drill.
There is a program called Green button to prevent the external hdd going to sleep but it works only in windows 7.
So i concluded that, if i pause a game for more than, say 10 min, resuming the game and playing it will be impossible. Kinda like what happens when you are playing fifa and you take out the disc on the PS2. In my case, i think the hard drive turns off or something else. Because the game can not access files from the HDD, unless they are already loaded (like the pitch and the crowd and the players on fifa). Is anybody else having this problem assuming you understood my question? And is there a solution or can someone make a solution for this?
You should check if there is a tool that can 'reprogram' the external closure so it doesn't go to sleep mode. Another option would be to disconnect the HDD and reconnect it BEFORE continuing the game after a long pause.

Ill try to find something to reprogram the external hard drive but dont think i have the skills for that
trying to reconnect the hdd wont help since it is clearing the loaded files from the external hdd after going to sleep.
I had that with my old WD External HArd Drive, that's the problem with desktop based External Drives, after a while of inactivity they spin down, that's why I switched the the portable external hard drives (no external power needed, just the USB), keeps it from doing that.
You could also do what dean suggests and unplug and replug it in so it spins up, though, I've found some games still get VERY pissy when doing that.
To expand on what deank said, every drive I have ever bought (including thumb drives) have drive software preinstalled on it, if you're like me you usually delete this or format the drive.
You can go to the drive manufactures website and download it. I just did this after reading your post. I have a seagate that sleeps after an hour, i opened the Seagate manager that I downloaded from their site and was able to pick power save options and change this sleep mode to several different intervals, also there was a "Never" I picked that.

I did format the hard drive many times and i did go to the manufacturers website.
Only software they offer is called green button and i can also change the option to never.
But this only works in windows and not if i plug the drive into my ps3.
So i guess there is nothing to fix this problem??

Well yeah if you change power save options of hard drive in windows, then it will only be applied on windows. You need a tool that changes this on the HDD itself, so it'll apply to all things you plug it into.
Give me the name of the drive and manufacturer and I'll see how my luck is.
(It may be some companies dont offer this option, but if it auto turns off then certainly as last resort it can be edited via hex.)

The Drive is supposedly a Samsung HD204UI which is actually a Seagate ST20000DL004 so if you goto Seagates website.. download a tool called Seagate Device Settings and then you can turn off sleep mode forever..

Yep, if it's Seagate thats what I got, but the tool I used was Seagate Manager (perhaps they have different programs for different drives) If you do get Seagate Manager like me then you:
To adjust the power setting:
Step 1: In the My Drives window, select the drive you want to adjust and click Settings
The Settings window opens.
Step 2: Click Adjust Power Setting. The Adjust Power Setting window opens.
Step 3: Select an interval from the drop-down menu or click Default to return to the original power setting time for the drive.
Step 4: Click Apply to save the power setting
The Adjust Power Setting window confirms that the power setting for your drive has been changed.
