Dead USB ports on 80GB CECHE01

I picked up a CECHE01 console for $25 which had ylod problem. I reflowed it, and as expected it booted right up! Unfortunately, none of the USB ports do anything... The previous owner said something about "couldn't get the controller to sync before it died" which I now know means dead USB ports

I took it back apart to see if there was anything obviously wrong, and could not find any broken traces/scorched chips/etc. The ports themselves look fine, the contacts are not crunched down or dirty or anything, any ideas what I could do to bring the USB back? I have a dead 60GB with the same ports, is the controller chips right inside the shielded boxes? I'd imagine I could swap them over easily enough if I knew it might fix the problem, but I don't want to go buy solder wick/flux/etc and waste time if that's not the solution...

Silly question, but are you using official controllers or aftermarket ones?

Official, of course, but that's not the problem- nothing I plug into any of the 4 USB ports does anything. The ports are dead, IE., no power or activity at all.

i have seen this problem 3 times and everytime its the exact same problem. when reassembling some one has pout a screw into the wrong hole and damaged a trace. hard to find but buy a magnifying glass and look near the edge of the motherboard near the power connector look at this picture for an idea of where to look and how to fix it

OMG that is *exactly* what it is! I should be able to just run a couple jumper wires to fix the shorts, right? (I have never been able to solder broken traces back, certainly not tiny ones like this) Thank you for the awesome tip, and I'm a little embarrassed that I missed it on first inspection
    [edit]
Yeehaw! Remember how I just said I've never been able to fix a broken trace? I used a magnifying glass, scraped back the epoxy a mm or so on both ends of the break, then tinned a single strand of thin copper wire, snipped it down to about 3 mm, laid it directly on the bad trace, crossed my fingers and touched it with ol' Needletip. It grabbed it, of course, but I was steady enough to put the melted thing back down, where it stuck. Couple of continuity checks, did a quick test and BOOM, I have a $25 B/C 80GB phat for the collection. And the kicker? I wasn't able to even check the firmware version till now, and it's on 3.50
Thanks again for your tip, rrelite!

glad to of helped it took me days to find the solution!!!

now stick it on ebay for £100 and buy 5 more faulty ps3's!!!

i get married on saturday and as a wedding present for my fiancee i have flown her best friend and her partner over to the uk from australia for 2 weeks for the wedding all paid for by buying and fixing ps3's of ebay in the last 4 months.

i dont pay more than £15 for them and sell them any where from £80 to £130 it really is easy money but a few tips for you, look for ps3s with warrenty sticker still intacked, make sure your honest with your listings, offer at least 3 month warrntee and avoid people selling multiple faulty ps3's!

remember if you can get a ylod for £15 and a ps3 with a faulty drive for for £15 (last week i paid £3.90 for one) put them together and you have a working ps3 you can sell for £80-£130!!! i bet your job dosnt pay you £100 for 40 mins work
