According to The Guardian, Sony has finally ceased to manufacture the PS2 worldwide, 12 years after its launch.
Well, it looks like it wasn't only in Japan, that Sony finally decided to kill the PS2 production.
According to The Guardian, the PlayStation 2 manufacture has ended after 12 years, worldwide.
It was the console that defined an era – but now Sony's PlayStation 2 has finally reached game over. The company has confirmed to the Guardian that after 12 years and 150m units sold worldwide, making it the most successful home games machine of all time, all PS2 production has ended worldwide.
Launched in 2000, the successor to the original PlayStation ended up with a library of more than 10,000 games titles by 2011, with 1.52bn individual games sold since launch. "At the height of the PlayStation 2's success, the word effectively came to mean video games for a lot of people," said Anna Marsh, a game designer who worked on Tomb Raider and Hitman.
Some of the PS2 final stats:
- Total games library: 10,828 titles
- Units sold: More than 150m
- Total game titles sold: 1.52bn

So that means they could bring back PS2 backwards compatibility on PS3 as it wont cut into their ps2 console profits anymore, but ive never known Sony to give their customers what they want (in fact they're better at taking it away).

Ya all PS2 games (at least the good ones) are going on SEN/PSN just like with PS1. Also thank god I bought a slim PS2 when it first came out and we've barely used it. Damn thing still roars like a champ. It's dusty as hell though, gotta fix that.
