E3 Card Reader - Entering service mode

I know this is outdated information for many people, but it`s here and it should be kept up to date or there is not a lot of point in this post! Anyway...

IF YOU ARE ON FIRMWARE 3.56 - 4.00 LEAVE THIS PAGE NOW!!!

Right, if you have purchased an E3 card reader in order to downgrade or enter service mode, then this is how it is done...

You need some files that are either available from my links below or from the E3 site in China.

    IMPORTANT:

YOU CAN ONLY DOWNGRADE FROM 3.55 DOWNWARDS USING THIS METHOD AT THIS TIME. IT WILL *NOT* WORK ON 3.56+ FIRMWARES. IF YOU ENTER SERVICE MODE, YOU WILL BE LOCKED IN IT FOR GOOD AS THERE IS NO UPDATED "FILE 2" LV2DIAG.SELF AT THIS TIME. IF YOU ARE ON 3.56+ - LATEST FIRMWARE, LEAVE THIS PAGE NOW!!!

EARLY FAT PS3 40GB/60GB/80GB MODELS WITH A 256MB NAND WILL HAVE THEIR BLURAY PLAYBACK DISABLED IF YOU DO THIS, UNLESS YOU BACK UP YOUR DEV_FLASH FOLDERS BEFOREHAND!!! SEE ELSEWHERE ON HOW TO DO THIS. IF YOU HAVE A LATER FAT MODEL OR A SLIM MODEL THEN YOU ARE SAFE. DO SOME RESEARCH TO AVOID HASSLE LATER ON.

IF YOUR BLURAY DRIVE IS MISSING (THE LOGIC BOARD ACTUALLY) THEN YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INSTALL ANY FIRMWARE TO YOUR PS3 UNLESS YOU MAKE A SPECIAL PS3UPDAT.PUP USING PS3MFW BUILDER OR ANOTHER PUP THAT SUPPORTS BLURAY-LESS INSTALLATION. I BELIEVE THERE IS ALSO A SCRIPT THAT YOU CAN RUN TO BYPASS THE BLURAY DRIVE CHECK

    We need:

E3 downgrade firmware : ... First link at bottom of post
    http://www.multiupload.com/2ER2QKNE4M

LV2diag.SELF file 1 : ... Link at bottom of post *OPTIONAL - USE ONLY IF DOWNGRADING

LV2diag.SELF file 2 : ... Link at bottom of post

    Directions are as follows...

    1) Eject discs if there is one in the console, then completely disconnect power from PS3 - On FATS flick the switch on the back, on SLIMs disconnect power lead for 5-10 seconds, then apply power so the red light comes on, but DO NOT TURN ON YET!

    2) Insert your E3 card reader into your PC. Ensure there is no MicroSD card slotted inside it. After a few moments, you will see 2 new drives in "My Computer". One is a standard 3.97mb drive and another called "Upgrader" which is 126kb in size (The card reader won`t light up or anything).

-In the E3 downgrade firmware folder you have downloaded (and unzipped) there is a file called "e3downgrade 12.03.bin" and we need to drag this bin file to the Upgrader drive.

-IMPORTANT : When you drag it over, there will be a red LED that will flash for a second or two, then it will turn blue. Once it has turned blue, this confirms that we have just installed the downgrade firmware to the E3 card reader. If you do not see a blue light, you have done something wrong. Try again until you get the blue light. We can now remove the E3 card reader.

    3) Now insert the card reader into your PS3 (Use the far right USB port as you look at the machine.)

    4) Press POWER then within 2 or 3 seconds press EJECT. This will start the process. After a few seconds, the E3 card reader light will turn blue and the PS3 will switch off. If it doesn`t turn blue, then try again but REMEMBER TO UNPLUG POWER FROM YOUR PS3 EVERY TIME YOU TRY. IT WILL NOT WORK IF PS3 HAS ALREADY BOOTED. YOU NEED TO DISCONNECT THE POWER CABLE OR SWITCH THE SWITCH AT THE BACK

    5) Once the PS3 has powered off, you can now remove your E3 card reader. Now turn your PS3 on and there will be a red box in the bottom corner of the screen saying you are in factory/service mode!

    6) Now, to downgrade, you can put your choice of PS3UPDAT.PUP onto any empty dongle and put the file 1 (LV2DIAG.SELF) on there too. These two files should be in the root of the USB dongle. Power on your PS3 and it will start the downgrade process. This is covered in greater detail elsewhere. To downgrade from 3.55 to 3.41 you will need the modified 3.41 (3.56 spoof) pup, otherwise the standard modified 3.41 will be fine. REMEMBER IF DOWNGRADING, YOUR HARD DRIVE WILL BE COMPLETELY WIPED!!!

    7) To get out of service mode, switch PS3 off and put the file 2 (LV2DIAG.SELF) onto an empty dongle.

    8) Put the dongle in PS3 and turn on. After a few seconds, your PS3 will power off by itself and you will back into retail mode.

If I have missed anything out, please let me know!

BTW: If I`m not supposed to put the links on I do apologise and feel free to delete this if need be. It has only just occurred to me.

I am currently on 3.41 modified pup firmware that I downgraded from stock 3.50 firmware with E3 cardreader. I want to go to a custom firmware. According to minverchck, my console can go down to 3.40.

Since I used modified pup to downgrade my slim, I must downgrade to 3.40 before I can go to custom firmware (3.41 or 3.55). Do I use the same lv2diag.self files 1 and 2 to downgrade and leave service mode as I used when I went from 3.50 to 3.41 mod?

Also, above steps 5 & 6 each say turn on ps3. Obviously, in between it must be turned off. This is the time it is just turned off with the controller (and not unplugged) if I remember correctly.

Based on pikeytrog's post (I DIDN'T read this when you've sent me a PM regarding this - EPIC FACEPALM), I assume you use the same lv2diag.self files as apparently "it only works from 3.55 DOWNWARDS" so I assume that it is universal from 3.55 and below - feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Have a look at the following links for more info:

    According to DCEmu Reviews

How to downgrade firmware 3.42/3.50 (NOT v3.55) to firmware 3.41 with E3 Card Reader :

    1. Download and extract "e3downgrade_12.03.rar (Download URL: http://www.mediafire.com/?1yoc2rvg7kg7yff)" to your computer
    2. Insert E3 Card Reader into the USB port of your computer.
    3. On your file browser, open "E3Upgrader"
    4. Drag and drop .bin file from "e3downgrade_12.03.rar" into "E3Upgrader"
    5. Red LED will flash. When you see the blue LED, that means the upgrade is successful and complete.
    6. Remove E3 Card Reader from computer
    7. Insert E3 Card Reader device that has been reprogrammed as downgrader into your console
    8. Turn on the console using the same boot method as all other jailbreaks: Press power then immediately press eject. Your console will turn on and E3 Card Reader will light up red LED followed by blue LED
    9. Turn off system via menu
    10. Remove E3 Card Reader dongle and turn on console to make sure you are in Factory Service Mode. You will see a huge red box on the screen saying Factory Service Mode.
    11. Load any blank FAT32 USB flash drive device with 2 files in the root directory:

    - Modified 3.41 PUP
    - Lv2Diag.self (File 1)

    12. These must be the only files on the USB key and must be placed in the main (root) directory.
    13. Insert flash drive into the last USB port to the right — the first USB port in from the right side if you’re facing the console. Turn the PS3 on and you will see black screen but the PS3 HDD light will flash.
    14. The process takes 3-4 minutes for the system to install the old firmware. Towards the end, the power button on the console will start flashing green and then your console will power off.
    15. Remove the flash drive and turn on the console, you will still be in Factory Service Mode. Please verify you have downgraded successfully to version 3.41 by going to "System Information".
    16. (Optional) – If you wish to downgrade to any older firmware you can follow step 4, 5, 6 using any regular firmware PUP. (You do not need to use modified custom firmware now that you are on 3.41).
    17. Insert USB flash drive back into your PC and delete the PUP and Lv2Diag.self file (File 1) and copy the other Lv2Diag.self (File 2) to the root of the flash drive.
    18. Insert USB flash drive back into the same USB port on the PS3 and power on your PS3. After 10 seconds it will power off.
    19. Remove USB flash drive and turn on your console again. You will be out of factory service mode and back in retail mode with your chosen firmware version installed. You will need to go through setting up settings configuration.

To go back to E3 Card Reader jailbreak device, just drag back the normal .bin files.

Thanks for posting this. I have a bunch of similar instructions, but they just say 3.50. I knew the files for downgrading 3.55 were firmware specific, just wanted to double check that the 3.50 weren't. Anyway, it worked fine and I'm now on 3.40 ofw. Thanks.

there is something that i am missing in this guide, why i should worry about being locked with service mode as lv2diag.self file2 on the flash drive wont work with 3.56 if i will have to insert it after my ps3 have already downgraded to 3.55 or 3.41 firmwares that work fine with with that file?

If you are on 3.56+ and you try this and it happens to take you to sevice mode, you won't be able to get out with the lvl2diag.self even if you happen to be able to downgrade..

thats because the files arent signed to run on 3.56+. To get out of service mode, you need to downgrade to 3.55. If you cannot downgrade to 3.55 your shit out of luck, until some figures out the values to modify on the nor flash to enable/disable service mode via hex edit.

If i have time, i may dump my flash on my cechh02 before and after service mode, and compare the files, then see if changing the vaules to the ones shown in my original nor to see if it get me out, IT SHOULD.

Then maybe see if others stuck on 3.56 with FSM want to try change these values to see if it'l help them (unsure it it will be different on slims and phats.

    Hi everyone,

I am trying to pull this downgrade off, but after using my e3 card reader a couple of times it doesn't seem to save any of my files anymore. For example I am copying the e3downgrader fix BD beta.bin on to the e3 upgrader. This all works fine and I can see the file being on there, but when I unplug the device and plug it back in the .bin file is gone. Therefore when I want to put it in my ps3 it cannot read the file, because it is just not there! Can somebody please help me with this!? It used to work fine but all of the sudden I've got this problem.
